2026/27 Age Group Formation Update
Updated Feb 10, 2026 at 8:30am
Following extensive review and discussion, US Youth Soccer, AYSO, and US Club Soccer have collectively decided to move to an age group player formation cycle that runs from August 1 to July 31, starting with the 2026-27 season/registration year. This change was made based on additional critical feedback, data, and expert input to better align players with their school-grade peers. This age group player formation is intended to create a more inclusive environment and encourage greater participation.
The August 1 to July 31 age group player formation cycle will be used for all USYS league and Cup competitions for the 2026-27 season/registration year including: National Championships, ECNL, DPL, National League and EDP League Play.
We know changes like this can raise questions, and our goal is to communicate clearly, early, and thoughtfully so families feel informed and supported throughout the process.
What is Changing?
As of the 2026-27 season, age groups will be defined by a seasonal model that starts on August 1 and ends on July 31 of the following year.
Age groups are currently defined by a birth year model that starts on January 1 and ends on December 31 of the same year. This was mandated by US Soccer in 2017 to align with FIFA international standards.
Why this change is being made?
The primary reason for this shift is to support the development of every player. After careful collaboration with US Soccer partners, moving to an August 1 player formation cycle better aligns with school calendars, supports social and individual needs, and ultimately enhances the youth soccer experience for families across the country. This alignment allows players to more often compete with peers they attend school with, which can positively impact confidence, enjoyment, and long-term development.
How CFC will adopt this change?
CFC will implement this transition thoughtfully and with each player’s development as the top priority:
- Players born between August 1–December 31 in their current age group and who are in the grade level below their current age group will be transitioned to the age group below.
- Players born between August 1–December 31 in their current age group and who are in the same grade level as their current teammates will be able to try out for both age groups. A discussion between the family, coach, and director can be held as needed to ensure the player is placed in the most appropriate environment for their development.
- Beginning immediately, training opportunities with new age group teams will be conducted so players have the opportunity to play with their potential new age group, and coaches can evaluate fit and provide feedback to parents prior to formal tryouts.
